Electrocardiogram(EKG) and Holter Monitor
What to expect:
The Pediatric Cardiologist will take a comprehensive personal and family history. A family history of congenital heart disease, cyanotic (blue baby); other obstructive or overflow lesions requiring the care of a cardiologist or surgeon is important risk factors. Tell your doctor if there is a family history of acquired heart disease such as acute rheumatic fever, Kawasaki Disease or hyperlipidemia resulting in myocardial infarction. A first degree relative with sudden or early cardiac death is an important reason to bring your child to the pediatric cardiologist for evaluation.
This test evaluates the electrical impulses of the heart. The EKG tests for arrhythmias or irregular heart rhythms. The Holter monitor records the EKG over extended periods of time; usually 24 hours.
This test evaluates the structure and function of the heart.
The echocardiogram utilizes sound waves or Doppler ultrasound waves to evaluate the chambers and great vessels of the heart. The Echocardiogram can determine the specific type of congenital or acquired heart disease is present and help decide whether further diagnostic testing is required such as an exercise stress test, Cardiac CT or MRI, cardiac catheterization or surgical procedure is needed.
We are part of a world class pediatric cardiovascular network. Our facility is accreditated by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) for Fetal and Pediatric echocardiography, insuring a high quality examination.
